The film consists of a series of abstract images that flicker and pulsate on the screen set to a soundtrack of religious chants. Facino said that the Rick-Show will be positioned at various sites across Kolkata, including riverbanks, public parks, boulevards and lakes, during winter and will showcase international cinema. Initially, “four thematic programmes from art films collection of the Fonds Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain Occitanie-Montpellier and Fonds Municipal d’Art Contemporain de Genève will be offered to the general public and art lovers”. There was much talk of reviving film seminars and film appreciation courses as part of art cinema’s resuscitation. Art cinema was pitched to the public as an integral part of Bengali heritage, whose memory is nostalgically invoked as that past recedes from living memory. Gopal’s study of Bengali filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, often regarded as a maker of art films, is a persuasive instantiation of the phenomenon she calls “Bollywood local,” a Bengali cinema in the new Bollywood mold. Ghosh’s ample citations of Satyajit Ray, and art cinema in general, should not mislead us into seeing his films as a continuation of the art film.
Despite these criticisms, flicker cinema has had a lasting impact on experimental film and video art. Its use of light and motion to create a visceral experience for the viewer has influenced filmmakers and artists across generations. The genre has also paved the way for other forms of experimental film, including video art, computer-generated imagery, and interactive installations. These festivals have helped to foster a vibrant and diverse community of experimental filmmakers in India and have contributed to the growth and development of the form in the region. Author Rochona Majumdar Majumdar dedicates a chapter to the film society movement which played a major role in spreading art cinema in India. She also says that these film societies acted as gatekeepers or purveyors of good taste by showing films which were labelled as intellectual. Besides, the book also mentions the role of critics and opinion makers like Marie Seton who turned Satyajit Ray into an emblem of Indian art film.
